Etotama is an anime about zodiac girls fighting and things in a tournament. I'm not in the mood to explain so I'll assume you already know what it is or go look it up on google.
EPISODE 3!! SOMEONE FREAKIN' DIES!!!
I thought this anime was all about happiness and heart warming, cute girls doing cute things, but NO!!!!
THAT CUTE LITTLE BORE URI-TAN!! THE LOLI!! MY ZODIAC!! THE CUTEST ONE!! DIE FIRST FOR THE LAMEST CAUSE!!! AN UNINTENTIONAL STAB THE HEAD FROM THAT BASTARD RAT RIGHT AFTER SHE GET INTO THE ARENA!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHAT?! IS EPISODE 3 A GOOD TIME TO KILL SOMEONE?!?!?! HUH!??!?!
Actually, it is.
And the death can be made full of feels if you use the other first two episodes properly. This one for example, Uri had already been an active character since episode 1. She's cute and all, everyone loves her. Plus, there's a one week distance between each episode. This make the fans develop more love little by little for her. Especially when they are looking forward to watch Etotama just to see their beloved Uri. And after 2 episodes, the love really develops.
Now, after using them properly, it's time to use maximum impact on the third episode. Make the episode ALL ABOUT the character you want to kill. Not really necessarily about them, but make sure the character appears a lot, and interact a lot. And THIS WILL add some extra weights to the feel when they die... especially if they are loved.
So yeah, it isn't really that surprising that someone dies in a battle anime... but... still...
